Perinatal Family Educator

Type of Employment: Casual Position offering 0-15 hours per week. Evening availability is required. Weekend availability is required 3 weekends per month. Shifts may require you to work up to 10 hours per day.
Position Term: Ending December 31, 2019, with the potential for renewal
Location: Mobile sites, within the City of Winnipeg
Additional Benefits: Mileage paid, Vacation pay as per Manitoba Labour Standards

Position Description:
As a perinatal family educator, you will be responsible for delivering pre-designed class content to parents during mobile in-home classes, as well as to groups of parents within Winnipeg. Classes focus on pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, breastfeeding, and baby care related topics. Our classes aim to provide factual evidence-based education and support to families in a non-judgmental environment that empower parents to make choices that are right for their family. The successful applicant is expected to be able to identify and utilize various teaching materials, strategies and visual aids in relation to pregnancy, the labour process, newborn care, breastfeeding, mental health, family relations, and self-care .  In addition to facilitating classes, you will be required to complete other administration tasks as required by Bean Family Wellness.


Mandatory Requirements:

  • 60 credit hours of completed post-secondary education in a health-related discipline or social science field is required. Other combinations of related education/experience may be considered.

  • Post-secondary or continuing education specific to maternal / family health during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum is required. Applicants must already have a strong understanding of perinatal topics and Anatomy & Physiology to be considered.  Doula Training, Childbirth Educator Training, and/or A Student Nurse or Nurse who has completed their Maternal Health Practicum meet this requirement.

  • Attendance of at least 10 births that you were present at the onset of labour, throughout labour, and/or the immediate postpartum period.

  • Experience working with parents who are expecting a baby or families with babies under the age of 6 months is required.

  • A satisfactory criminal record check and child abuse registry check must be provided by the applicant prior to hiring.


The candidate must be able to demonstrate the following SKILLS:

  • Ability to work effectively independently as well as part of a collaborative team

  • Proven ability to create a safe and supportive environment that promotes understanding of the birth process and family centred care

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills

  • Strong time management skills

  • Demonstrated strong public speaking, presentation and teaching skills

  • Basic skills related to audio/visual and other technological equipment required including experience with Microsoft PowerPoint, and digital devices (laptop, LCD projector, iPads)

  • The ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently

  • Carry a Class 5 Driver’s Licence and have consistent access to a car.
