Perinatal Family Educator

Type of Employment:
Casual Position offering 0-20 hours per week. Evening availability is required. Weekend availability is required at least 2 weekends per month. Shifts vary between 3.5 hours and 10 hours per day (including breaks). We are open to working with the successful candidates availability / preference for hours.
Length of Term: 12 months, with the potential for renewal
Location: Mobile sites, within the City of Winnipeg
Wage: Dependent on qualifications and experience
Anticipated Start Date: April 13, 2024

Position Description:
As a perinatal family educator, you will be responsible for delivering pre-designed class content to parents during mobile in-home classes, as well as to groups of parents within Winnipeg. Classes focus on pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, breastfeeding, and baby care related topics. Our classes aim to provide factual evidence-based education and support to families in a non-judgmental environment that empower parents to make choices that are right for their family. The successful applicant is expected to be able to identify and utilize various teaching materials, strategies and visual aids in relation to pregnancy, the labour process, newborn care, breastfeeding, mental health, family relations, and self-care .  

In addition to facilitating classes, you may be required to complete other administration tasks as required by Bean Family Wellness.

Applicants are required to meet or exceed the following qualifications:

  • a minimum of 60 credit hours of completed post-secondary education in a health-related discipline or social science field is required. Other combinations of related education/experience may be considered.

  • professional and/or continuing education specific to maternal, infant, and family health during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum is required.

    • Doula Training, Childbirth Educator Training, and/or A Student Nurse or Nurse who has completed their Maternal Infant Health Practicum would meet this requirement.

  • a strong understanding of Anatomy & Physiology and how it relates to perinatal topics and newborns is required.

  • attendance at a minimum of 10 births in a professional capacity where you were present at the onset of labour, throughout labour, and/or the immediate postpartum period is required. Births attended must be in the past 5 years.

  • experience working with parents who are expecting a baby or families with babies under the age of 6 months is required.

  • a strong understanding of local Shared Health & WRHA policies involving prenatal, birthing, postpartum, and newborn care is preferred.


The candidate must be able to demonstrate the following SKILLS:

  • Ability to work effectively independently, as well as part of a team

  • Proven ability to create a safe and supportive inclusive environment that promotes understanding of the birth process and family-centered care

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills

  • Strong time management skills

  • Strong public speaking, presentation and teaching skills

  • Intermediate skills related to audio/visual and other technological equipment required including experience with Microsoft PowerPoint, and digital devices (laptop, LCD projector, iPads)

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently

  • Carry a Class 5 Driver’s Licence and have consistent access to a car
